Imagine a world, many thousands of years in the future, some of the animals we know now, and our own species no longer exist, evolution has been accelerated, allowing new sentient beings to take our place and new animal species to walk the Earth. This is the world of the Selenthians, a race created by the astonishingly talented . One particular Selenthian [link] a cartographer by trade keeps a diary of the animals he encounters as he travels the world. Ths is an exerpt from one of his entries.
"The Tundra-Plain Palunk" ' Standing almost as tall as myself at the shoulder, the palunk is an odd-toed ungulate found over much of the main Southern Western continent. Paelo-Archeaologists suggest this land of volcanoes and frigid grasslands was once heavily forested and tropical. Perhaps the ancestors of the Palunk called these forests home? Palunk live in family groups, usually consisting of one or two mature Males, three to four immature males, several mares and calves. Their curious noses are an adaptation that allows them to warm and moisturise the cold, dry air of the chill plains they call home. Their diet is chiefly touch grasses an roots that the dig up with their large hoofclaws. Palunks can be domesticated, but must be aquired from the wild when very young, or bred fromcaptive stock. they also carry a reputation for stubborness.......'
NOTE: as the Selenthians as of yet have no "official" written language or alphabet, the scribblings in this pic are Craddoch's own personal shorthand. Slenthians are HERS, (c) DO NOT STEAL
I love love the 'handwriting' to death. Also, I like the floppy nose. It reminds me of bull elephant seal thingers... I can't remember what they're called.
I'm so glad SOMEONE is drawing Selenthian critters, as I'm so not good at it at all.

The nose is a real adaptation, Neanderthal man had a broad nose and there's an odd looking antelope from cental asia/the Russian steppes called a Saiga that has such a hooter. I think with bull Elephant seals it's an echo-chamber to make their roars louder. The Palunk itself is evolved from the Brazillian tapir, and I took somewhat of a liberty in imagining much of South America is now cold pampas/steppes. As for the shorthand, totally made up, but I tried to keep some symbols in common, as in the lines denoting measurements.
